In February 2015, a large scale rock fall occurred on US 50 at Cave Rock, located on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. An investigation showed that more rocks were likely to fall in the future, and the Nevada Department of Transportation began work to protect the public while minimizing the visual effect of any solution. The Cultural Resources Section at NDOT researched the history of Cave Rock as part of that effort. The photos presented here are selected from the Department archives at NDOT and at the Nevada State Library and Archives, and represent images captured at the beginning of the Department up through today. The earliest photos are digitally reproduced from glass negatives graciously curated at the Nevada State Library and Archives.
